One of the fundamental roots of the social/communal nature of person

Knowing that one knows creates a dynamic of movement to an other. The concept of person that the subject is to the consciousness of the subject in self-consideration/self-knowing moves to have a knowledge that matches who and what the subject is. The subject is a self-knowing being, so the subject seeks a knowledge taht matches what it is; the knower strives to for a concept of himself that is self-knowing; an other, a subject. This is apparently one of the fundamental roots of the social/communal nature of person. In self knowledge the knower seeks a knowing that is alive,as the knower is alive. It also bears a resemblance to the processional quality of being that is in the Father, and that is realized in the Son.

A thought on what comes from love

The question in love is not so much what we do in love, but what we are about in love.

It is a question about what your spirit produces.

If our actions are like words, what are we stating with our actions? Action is about saying "what should be."

What is the spirit of the thing that we asserting with our actions? In spousal love the spirit of the thing that is asserted is a unitive being, because spousal lovers are acting for "being one".

In sacramental marital love, the Holy Spirit realizes this aspiration of the spouses: He takes up their aspiration in His spiration and is the consumation of the whole movement of unitive love.

The spouses unite in and agree in their will of being gift to each other, a willing which moves toward a will of giving being. Acting for something says it ought to be.

The fundamental generosity of this unitive gift of being is like or images in a analogous way, the gift that is involved in the Holy Spirit's procession as Gift in the Trinity. The element of uniting in gift that is an aspiration in the spousal love is sufficiently like the spiration that is the Holy Spirit, to be taken up by the Holy Spirit and realized in him.

Jesus said that the Holy Spirit will lead us to all truth. This seems to refer not just to factual truths, but to the way of being gift, and uniting in being gift that can be realized in the Holy Spirit.

So...

  1. Sacramental marriage is indissoluble because it is taken up in the Holy Spirit;
  2. Since unitive love moves toward the realization in a third person, the very vein of the truth of love is contradicted by acting against an other proceeding from love, as in contraception;
  3. Unitive love always moves toward the desire and realization of being one, so acting for it is asking for it's realization. Which is why cohabitation contains an inherent contradiction. Ask for it or not, but don't live the contradiction of asking for unity but not accepting unity's indissolubility realized in the Holy Spirit.

Gender

Beauty in woman is about the receptivity of the gift of being that man is able to offer (power, strength). In this way beauty is realizing the good that man wants for woman. It is a yes to the good willed by the man. And so is an act for his good as his execution of will for her good is how he becomes good. Then you have the unitive state stage considerations of interpenetration and understanding of each others good and how it is a common good that leads to being one and asserting being gift, with it's natural arguments of being unto itself, new being.

Gender ramble

Hey Greg,

My initial belief is that it is too long to cover in one class, most will not read it over later, unless in a group setting, but it is not too difficult to read and understand.

In my experience the subject leads to two main points/questions, and it did again in recent weeks, weeks spent covering marriage and it's collateral issues. Discussion on marriage leads to the similarity of the intent of NFP, and contraception, both wishing a child not to come as a result of the act, and the likeness of means, or object by which this wish is pursued, NFP measure and tracking of symptoms of fertile periods vs the pill. The spirit of the act seemed the same to them.

Second, same sex leads to our inability to state what distinguishes the genders, beyond the physical, and why that truth or lie makes such a relationship incapable of being sealed, or realized in the Holy Spirit. I think the gender answer lies in the analogy of being, where what a gender is participates in Gods being, and specifically in his points of procession. Somewhere along the lines of "being"/"is" and "being of"/"ishah". (the ishah word I think is the term used in Genesis for man and woman as noted in theology of the body.

So the Holy Spirit can take up the union of the two priniples of gender that exist in man and woman as spouses, which participate in God insofar as in the fusty procession there is "being and being of", that allows the Holy Spirit to take up that relation of the spouses into himself, as it overlays the truth that is already there in him as who he is and how he proceeds from the Father and the Son. The giving and receiving of being at this fundamental level us the relationship wherein Gift occurs. Where the Holy Spirit proceeds.

This fundamental relationship is not present in same sex relations at the level of being and so cannot be taken up into the very being of The Holy Spirit, nor made one in him and by him, as the seal of the marital bond.

Well thats my ramble. Gotta get to work.

NFP vs Contraception

Natural Family Planning is the process of abstaining from sexual intercourse during the time a woman is fertile and able to conceive. To determine when ovulation occurs, the woman observes changes that occur within her body. There are two methods of natural family planning. One is the process of observing changes in cervical mucus. During ovulation, the mucus becomes stretchy, clear and slick. The other method is a daily monitoring of the woman’s temperature, which will slightly rise during ovulation. Natural family planning has no abortifacient function. (from http://www.lifeissues.org/connector/2010/Feb10_Dispelling_The_Myths.html)

The debate over NFP vs Contraception appears to be that contraception is wrong due to it being a matter of the will. But NFP is a matter of the will as well.

The syllogism is
1. Love resolves to the willing of an other for the others own sake (as the content and realization of what is being acted for in unitive love.)
2. Contraception intentionally wills and acts that a third not come from the act of love.
3. Contraception acts against the realization of love.

An approach

One approach in the argument is to start with the truth of the Holy Spirit and that he comes to us. But how do we participate in the Holy Spirit. It seems reasonable that this is through love. How does love help us participate in the Holy Spirit.
